However, it was his vocal and energetic commitment to my union during our recent contract negotiations, that cemented my opinion of him as a champion of working people and labor. He was one of the first people to sign a Pledge to Picket if we went out on strike and was ready to be there as long as we were. Luckily in the 11th hour a strike was averted, but I will never forget Syd’s commitment to our fair labor demands."

“Syd and his wife Jessica supported our strike in August of 2022. I'm a master log scaler for Weyerhaeuser, and I've worked at the Port of Olympia for almost eight years. It was a very stressful time in my life when we met, and I wasn't feeling very supported by other unions, by my community, and in general felt we were on our own. Syd and Jessica, along with a few other members of the DSA in Olympia visited us on the picket line, gave us their support, sat down to talk to us and provided lunch for us. It was a huge morale boost. It was the support I needed to feel like we were doing the right thing and helped strengthen my devotion to the cause. They returned weekly to show their commitment to us and to bring provisions, and from there we built a friendship. One year after meeting, they were attending my wedding, this time to support me and my wife. I love them. Syd and Jessica's commitment to labor and to our community is inspiring. “I was raised Jewish in the shadow of the Holocaust. As children, we collected money to buy orange trees in Israel, supposedly the only place Jews were safe. But my parents also taught me to stand up for justice and fairness for everyone. As a young adult, those values led me to question and ultimately condemn Israel’s land theft, ethnic cleansing of Palestinian people, religious nationalism, and apartheid system. Now we are watching genocide unfold as Israel deliberately kills tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians - mothers and children, journalists and medics – while its defenders unfairly accuse its critics, even its Jewish critics, of anti-semitism. I thought never again meant never again for anyone! I applaud Syd Locke for demanding a ceasefire and justice for Palestine. He’s got my vote!”
